Chinese Moon Festival

Hello everyone, I hope you have enjoyed the Moon Festival, and had some great time with the people you want to be with. I enjoyed it very well, it was most of the time performing on stage or training. But had some very good times and nice dinners as well.

Actually the Chinese Moon Festival or Zhongqiu Festival is a very very nice day. Bright moon in the heavens, surrounded by blinking stars. It is one of the most important celebrations in the Chinese tradition more than 3000 years old. Now it is a public holiday in China and Taiwan, even in Vietnam they celebrate this wonderful festival and of course the Chinatowns worldwide. Families are gathering and having dinner together. Eating Mooncake, matchmaking, carrying sky lanterns, burning incense to Chang’e and the Dragon dances and Moon rabbit are all traditions of this Moon Festival.

You know, it can be good if you are very busy or really into something and need a brake. Then you should take the time to refill yourself and enjoy from nature things, like a walk in the nature, mountains and waters or the sky and heaven. Collect the chi and you will feel more energized after. People now are so attached to technology, electronic devices. Working behind the computer at day and watching e-mail with your laptop at home and communicating with Facebook while traveling. It is a pity if you missed the beautiful moon, how long did you look up to the sky and enjoyed the beautiful moon with your eyes?

I have written a comedy Moon ACT for our Wudao Dragons performance show to celebrate Chinese Moon Festival. It is a story about 3 Martial Artists, named the ‘Wudao Dragons’ gathering at the mountains to enjoy the beautiful view of the city and the Moon. Then suddenly when they are dancing the Moondance, they were attacked by a bunch of villains and stolen their precious Wudao Martial Arts Manual. This is the beginning of this adventure.. I’ve added the Wudao Elements to this story to create characters and interaction. You could have a glimpse of it watching the video on the www.facebook.com/wudao.nl and will be posting some footage of our rehearsal. It would be great if we can perform this again but in theater in the near future, because with the sound and lights on stage it will even make it better. I have also invited Kung Fu Panda from ancient China to join our Wudao Dragons show in The Hague capital city of Holland, and unfortunately he didn’t catch up the flight and had some checks at the customs. But still made it to the other events. You can now book Kung Fu Panda at www.wudao.nl

TVB – Kung Fu Star show

When I left Wudang Mountain, I headed South towards the Guangdong district and finally back home in Hong Kong. It was a great experience at Wudang and I didn’t expected another adventure during my stay in China.

TVB Kung Fu Star (全球功夫新星)which is broadcasting this evening in Hong Kong. I feel lucky to have this opportunity to show my talent and potential. I am proud to represent Holland to compete against other contestants. This program stimulates Martial Arts in media and therefore it got my full support, good idea!

It perfectly fits into my Journey to the East adventure. And I can say during my stay in China, I had lots of great experiences and met lots of people, including masters by fate.

I also want to thank all the friends for supporting my Kung Fu Star 全球功夫新星 appearance. Even when I am in Hong Kong, I’ve got your support. And I actually did not expected so many people were able to come and support me at TVB 全球功夫新星show. But the most touching moment for me was actually when I finished my first form, hear the warm applause at the background, then I can see my grandfather sitting next to the jury in the middle of the audience is standing up. He is so excited and happy seeing his grandson doing so well. Because I can finally show him that I am already grown up. Since he does not really know my active life in Holland. Their recognition is my challenge during this visit back home in Hong Kong, and nothing better than this performance can express my thoughts and summarize my performance for the past few years. So I’m glad everything went so well. I want to win this price for my grandfathers big birthday. It would be the perfect present.

Alex Cheung as Asian Pirate

This weekend I am performing along with Waila Woe as an Asian pirate for the Rotterdam world harbour day (Dutch: Wereldhavendagen) www.wereldhavendagen.nl This act is a booking via Wudao.

It is a fight of two Asians, very skilled martial arts pirates fighting for the treasure map at the Rotterdam’s pirate bay. It will be very crowded tomorrow, as the  weather is fine with the sun shining at the bay. 10.000 of people are expected to come around.

During my google research for how to become a pirate, I am surprised that there is something like a ‘Pirate Day’ which is a international parodic holiday. This is celebrated on the 19th of September each year and everybody in the world should talk like a pirate. Aye Aye, Captain!  Shut up, let’s fight! Ok, something like that.

Tomorrow I wanna go around talking like a pirate…got any more random pirate sayings?

So If you want a taste of some pirate, come to the pirates bay at Maritiem Museum this weekend and we’ll meet you right there at the upper deck of the Black Pearl.

You know what the worse nightmare for a pirate on a blind date is? a sunken chest with no booty

Day 2 – TVB International Kung Fu Star 2011 shooting

TVB Kung Fu Supernova

So my journey at TVB is starting today. For those who missed the news, I’ve been selected by TVB to participate the International Kung Fu Star 2011 reality show right after my Journey to Wudang. There are preliminaries for several countries and I will represent The Netherlands for this contest. I will update you via my blog and www.facebook.com/alexcheung.nl  (like the page for inside content)

I will be at TVB studio from 09.00 to 20.00 tomorrow.

I came across this blog, it’s someone in Malaysia when recruiting for the Kung Fu Star over there: http://double-lithium.blogspot.com/2011/06/audience-001-in-kungfu-tv-show.html

It’s late at night here, I just walk up the balcony and oh, what is Hong Kong night view beautiful. I looked up to the blinking stars and I wished good luck for the coming days. Goodnight!

Wudang Mountain

Dear All,

I am safely back in Hong Kong, I have been to the Wudangshan (Mountain) for a few weeks. There I stayed for training and meditating purposes. I have met Zhangran my good friend from Shandong and this time with a girlfriend and her cousin. I haven’t seen him for 2 years now, I have known him as a Wudang kungfu practitioner back in Holland. We had a very good time together.

I know, sorry guys it’s been a long long time for my blog. As you might know, Facebook is blocked within mainland China. There they use their own social platforms. The place I was living was a small village in Wudang Mountain, so internet is not always guaranteed. I have risking my life recording video for my Youtube channel, and also took lots of pictures which I’ll be uploading soon..

I am really excited to see the rest of the photos which are taken by others, when I get them I will then share with you too.

If you had checked my gallery you could see the photos I already had uploaded in my Wudang trip album. Really nice pictures, beautiful scenery just like a painting.

Wudang mountain, a wonderful place. To me, this is a destiny trip. It gives me a special feeling, awareness and the things happening are so round. I can say it is one of the best trips I have experienced. I have met a lot of people, and seen lot of things, it was fun everyday or better saying made fun everyday. Living a simple life, the contrast between Hong Kong city and Wudangshan from a foreigner.

During my stay at Wudangshan, I felt I was in the ancient times surrounded by martial arts scenery ~

Chinese Lunar Party @ RASA Utrecht

3 Feb. 2011 – How do you celebrate the Chinese New Year?

This was one of the questions they asked me on the Dutch National Radio interview. I volunteered bringing people together as a performing artist, co-organizer of this wonderful cultural celebration of Chinese New Year event at RASA, theater for World Cultures bringing them joy and happiness. Of course, Chinese New Year is less amusing then in China. But we try to make the best out of it! We should enrich culture!

Chinese New Year is the most spectacular day of the year. Everybody in China is celebrating it, fireworks, a lot of good food and traditional dishes, snacks and more. The sphere is really nice. Married couples give red envelope with brand new notes inside, known as Hong Bao in Mandarin and Lai See in Cantonese, to unmarried, most of whom are children. A gift which is given during holidays or special occasions. The red color symbolizes good luck and ward off evil, known in Eastern countries. A lot of happiness and joy, family and friends come together and have dinner.

This morning I took Dark Angel to the car-wash. She was dirty, so I took her to a shower. While driving through the wash lane another TV programmer called me. The situation made it quite funny.

Now she’s clean & shiny I immediately drove to a college in Alkmaar, which is about an hour driving from Utrecht. There I had to give a Kungfu workshop to the VWO pupils. They had a China theme and different Chinese cultural workshops.

This college offers the subject; Chinese language. There should be more of these schools in Holland. This is a great opportunity for the new generation. When I was in college I didn’t had this wonderful offer!

Here are some pictures, there were 55 teenagers! Wow, this is amazing. I didn’t had a microphone but still it went really good and they were all enthusiast about this art. I’m happy that I also emphasized on the philosophy and culture of Chinese Kungfu, instead of the physical movements.

It is important that the youth learn to know their body. Balancing the body without errors. That, what is out of balance, is dangerous. This is the same in life. Overdoing or not living in harmony with nature, is risky.

Learning Kungfu keeps them fit and healthy. Purifying the mind, and to be aware of the surroundings by forgetting them. It is an art that comes with a deep philosophy.

First of all, the pupils are all stiff, and not flexible. Except for some girls in the group, but they need strength.

You have to loosen your muscle to relax and adjust to the flow of the movement. If you want to eat, you have to open your mouth right?

It was amazing to see such a big group of Western students practicing Chinese Kungfu, it gives me self-satisfaction. I am proud of you guys!

After this class I had to rush back to Utrecht. The weather was fine, so I enjoyed driving. In Utrecht I had to go to the RASA Theater for the Wu Dao Dragons performance  in the evening. This event was organized by Kosmopolis Utrecht, Rasa, ACSU, Wu Dao Dragons, Stichting Lai Yin and local entrepreneurs. But we had to do the rehearsal and technical stuff. I didn’t had lot of sleep, because I was editing the Music Video for the performance till deep in the night. Everything was a bit in a hurry, but it was a good show. I really appreciated the warm support and enjoyed the sphere.

It was definitely different backstage, but that is the perspective of the performing artist. Although the technical problems and preparation, I have to say Congratulations Wu Dao Dragons! It was really good to see people enjoying the show. If the our music video worked well on the background, it would be even better! You know what, it is always the technical problems,  it is not the first time. Last year with the China Festivals the music also went down when Koon hit the floor. Guess what, this is the second time! And we changed the sequence, but what a coincidence he had problems with the music when he was doing his solo. Yup, I just find it really sad for him but appreciate his professional spirit and persistence. To me it was quite stressful fixing the technical problems with the technician, because you want to concentrate on the performance. It needs a lot of focus. I’m happy to have Leon and Weije here as our presenters, both good friends of mine. In the back of this picture you see Bas as the DJ. We all know each other and that is so beautiful about it when we combine our strength we can make something together, which we should be proud of ourselves.

Later that eve, we had another performance. This was for the club party at the same location.

Finally at 22.30 we can change clothes and have a drink and a chitchat with our friends in the club party. Pack in and time for some pictures 😉 So this was my Lunar year instead of having dinner with family. Stressful but exciting and self satisfying. When I hear the applause and the smiles I’ll forget all the hard work.

I would like to thank everybody who came to see us, our performance and participated the Chinese NY event. The sphere was really great. I love it! Special thanks to my sister & Ck for the help.

It was a heavy day, fully planned, workshop and two performances.. and all the other organisational things and problems between. There are times that I am so stressed by the pressure, but I never had given up for the things I did.

During hectic and stressful times, I’d like to relax my self by taking a hot tube, I try to stay under the water as long as I can hold my breath. This will loosen me completely. This is the way I relax & recharge myself. Another good help is a nice massage. Burn a home scent and put on relaxing music. That will calm you down by feeling, smelling and hearing it. Maybe it will work for you too.

I get my inspiration from the daily life and I’ll think about it when I go to bed. In my sleep, it’s processing the memories and fantasy.

ACSSNL – Chinese Lunar Festival

It was way too early this morning! But it was nice to see how a group of Chinese exchange students from all different cities in Holland set up a big show in Theater De Muze in Noordwijk to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The Chinese Embassy and local news were present. Unfortunately, I don’t have any video recorded, cuz the person overslept and then the other technician guy who promised me to do it forgot to record our Wu Dao Dragons show!! Nooooo, hopefully there will be some video footage online soon, there were lots of people filming and taking pictures.
